Influence of Air Velocity and Glass Shield on The Performance of Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) In Central Air-Conditioning System of a Building

High rise buildings which are mostly air-tight require standard air properties (Temperature, Humidity, Velocity, Cleanliness etc.) for comfort and healthy livelihood of its occupants.This work presented a short report of experimental work conducted to analyze the effect of Air velocity (from Air-Handlers) and Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) glass shield on the output of UVGI system typically used in the ductwork of ventilation & Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. UVGI device & sensors were acquired, installed and used in a control section of a functional building HVAC system. Measurements of the intensity of the UVGI at four different positions in the control section were recorded using the sensors with and without glass shield on the UVGI systems while the Air-Handler is off and on respectively. The data recorded where analyzed using Microsoft Excel. T-tests assuming unequal variances (α = 0.05) was used to compare between the results obtained. The result shows that with the incorporation of glass shield to the mercury lamp, the net lost would have dropped to only about 14% as against 45% with no glass shield due to the significant effect of Air velocity on the UVGI output.
