Assessment of Cyanobacterial Abundance and Water Quality in Kazaure Dams, Jigawa State Nigeria

Purity of water depends on how less abundance of toxic compounds and substances deposited in it. Cyanobacteria affect the quality of water especially in the Dams that are mostly used for drinking and other domestic uses. The abundance of cyanobacteria and relation to water quality in Kazaure Dams Jigawa State, Nigeria was evaluated. Data collected were recorded, analyzed, tabled and interpreted using standard procedures. The result of physical and chemical properties of water showed variation between the samplings station, months and Dams in both blooming and decaying seasons. The result on the abundance of cyanobacteria revealed that, Anabaena circinalis and Microcystic aeruginosa ware more abundant in Dambo Dam when compared with other species. Least number of cyanobacteria was recorded in Wawan Rafi with and the species observed was Oscilatoria limosa. For seasonal variation, correlation matrix indicated positive correlations (0.4 – 0.96) in all the species of cyanobacteria for blooming season with exception of Chroococcus turgidus which was not significantly different in both the seasons. Blooming season had the highest number of cyanobacterial species (61) than decaying season (46). The cyanotoxins analysis indicated that Cylindrospermopsins and Microcystins were higher in concentration (4.4 to 4.9 µg/L) in Dambo Dam, and Kazaure Dam respectively. Anatoxins and 2-methylisoborneols were recorded in least concentration in Wawan Rafi and Dambo Dams respectively. The quality of water in Wawan Rafi Dam is significant when compared with other Dams. It is recommended that all the three Dams water requires treatment before domestic use.
